Welcome to my birthday week, people! Hope you’re enjoying yourselves on this lovely Tuesday in July… I know *I* am. I actually did my homework this week so I have a bit more to talk about… or maybe it’s just me being overly excited during the week of my birth. I know the MJ thing is trying to blow over but will never quite go away… all I wanna do is listen to my favorite MJ song PYT. So you can play along with me if you want, while we read my thoughts for the week.

BAND OF THE WEEK: MATT & KIM

How cute are they. Matt Johnson & Kim Schifino met in art school in Brooklyn about 5 years ago. They formed this little musical duo playing warehouse shows in Brooklyn. They both sing, Kim plays drums, and Matt plays keyboards. It’s fun music that’s so simple, it just makes you happy to hear. You’ve probably heard this little number on the radio or maybe even a bacardi mojito commercial. It’s called “Daylight,” and it’s pretty damn catchy. So listen & love it.

Their whole album Grand is pretty similar in sound, and if you like “Daylight” you’ll like the rest of it. The whole thing only takes about half an hour to listen too, so if you’re feelin’ down and need a little musical pick-me-up, check’em out. Here’s thei
r myspace and website.

If you absolutely love them, you’re not so much in luck for seeing them soon. They were supposed to play in Athens a few months ago but had to cancel due to Matt hurting his back… and they JUST played last Thursday at Opera (while we were smoothin’ it up at Yacht Rock) and may not be back for a while as they have a bunch of tour dates lined up. Oh well. Next time around!!

Death Cab vs Jared Leto’s Guyliner

I mentioned this the other day on Twitter, but in case you didn’t catch wind of it, I just found this funny. Ben Gibbard & Nick Harmer of Death Cab were hating on Jared Leto‘s eye makeup, saying he’s trying to “act” like a rock star since that’s where he started out: acting. We all know the former “My So-Called Life” hottie is now the lead singer of 30 Seconds to Mars, the screamy scr-Emo rock group that wants you to bury them. Uh… or something like that. Don’t hate, I actually like that song (yes, you know I have a soft spot for scr-Emo boys… or if you didn’t, you do now), so here’s that boy & his beautiful eyes. Make your own judgment call. I think Ben & the boys are just jealous. :)

Stuff I Thought Was Pretty Cool This Week

-Peter Gabriel plans to cover a Vampire Weekend song, “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” that mentions him
-Speaking of VW, even though it was thought to be a joke, there is supposedly a Vampire Weekend cover band (called The VW Bugs) in the works, created by super-fan Katharine Brandes
-The Killers are coming out with an album of cover songs within the next year.
-The Editor of PASTE magazine shares his favorite albums of 2009 (so far), including The Decemberists, Animal Collective, Passion Pit, and Elvis Perkins.
-Elliot Smith‘s (love him!) sister just sold his car to someone on Craig’s List for charity, after driving it around for the past 5 years since his death. That’s pretty cool.
