welcome to LENT, peeps… the season where we’re supposed to be getting ready for easter… when, in fact, many of us who celebrate this season use it as a time to give up vices. for some reason, lent has been a super magical time for me where i’ve, somehow, been able to give up almost anything for six weeks. anything! hell, when i was younger i used to give up three of the most amazing things this world has to offer, all at once: meat, chocolate, and soda. diet coke, specifically… i know right?! i gave up all three, for six weeks, for years on end (!), and somehow managed to survive. crazy. funny how that works, and funny how i can never manage to do *that kinda crazy* any other time during the year… hmm! #willpowerissues anyway, two years ago, my lenten thing was giving up processed foods– and you’ve heard me talk about that enough for one lifetime
last year i gave up “paid coffee” (i.e. going to starbucks). this year i’m going back to a simpler time… i’m giving up meat, “goin’ veg” again, and trying to drink mainly water. i don’t drink much water at all. need to fix that. so i’ll be exploring the veggie world for at least the next six weeks…
…which brings me to our focus for this week. Real Simple magazine. ya heard of it? read it? swear by it? i know a ton of people (most of them are moms) who use it to guide their lives. i would pick it up from time to time while getting my nails done or something, and then randomly got a subscription to the magazine a few months ago because i liked it so much. it’s got a little bit of everything: bargains, decorating tips, crafts, beauty hints, and (my favorite, of course!) recipes. i think one of the main focuses of the magazine is to help its readers save money, which is always awesome, and for that reason they feature a lot of recipes that don’t cost a lot to cook, as well as simple stuff that’s easy to make during the week. over the past few months i’ve been trying out certain recipes and absolutely loving the results… you know how sometimes you try recipes in magazines and they’re not exactly what you thought they’d be?? don’t worry about these… all the one’s i’ve tried have been beautiful. i left february’s copy with my mom & sister as they’d already made plans to cook more than a couple of the recipes in the magazine… but march’s copy arrived yesterday so i’m good to go!
i spent a while today thumbing through the march issue. it’s pretty awesome!! i won’t ruin your fun by telling you everything that’s in it, but you should definitely give the magazine a try and check out the awesome recipes near the back. at least flip through it the next time you’re in line at the grocery store… and tell me what you think! subscriptions are cheap!
have a great weekend, little effs. i’ll be working and hating my life, but i trust you’ll enjoy yourself for me. see ya next week. cheers!
peace,
james
