Prime Vinyl: “Love Me DO”

I’ve often wondered if I should’ve been born at a different time.  My music tastes are often wide-ranging among styles, genres and eras though I rarely reject music of the here-and-now pop variety.

I realize I could write pages and pages and not truly describe the essence of the Beatles to the fullest detail but the purpose here is not to write a history of music article.  I merely want to remind you of the music that is not a “has been” but a shaping part of yours and my culture, whether you’re a fan of the particular works or not.

For instance, my favorite Beatles song remains to be a little known and not widely acknowledged song “If I Fell”.  It had some airtime back in the day and can be found occasionally on an upbeat 1960’s channel not focused on folk or classic rock elements.  I doubt any of you have ever heard it.  I know that none of you would first think of this song when remembering the Beatles, but still. If you think of “Love Me Do”, then you’re right on target.  That was their first mainstream hit.

I find it interesting that the Beatles were not made popular because of their inventive sound or songwriting ability.  They’re skill is embedded in the art of practice. They would play for 8 hours a night at a gig in Germany when they were starting out.  Granted, they were using Preludin to stay up that late. I guess Momma was right, however, practice does make perfect.

Each of the fab four struck out with solo careers after their 1970’s break up.  It would’ve been interesting to see where John Lennon ended up as far as worldwide success and fame had he not been shot in 1980.  Sir Paul McCartney remains the most sought after former Beatle presently.  His fall performance here at Piedmont Park was widely held as one of the top concerts last year.  You can revel in your own British Invasion now that Rock Band is out with the Beatlemania version.  I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in their moptop.
